Charles DeBellevue, flying with the 555th FS during the Vietnam War, was the first Weapons Systems Officer in the USAF to earn ace status. On September 9, 1972, he took to the skies with Capt. John Madden in their F-4D Phantom II and downed two MiG-19s, giving DeBellevue his fifth and sixth aerial victories. He ended the Vietnam War as the highest scoring U.S. aviator, one of only five American aces.
