A multi-purpose fighter introduced in 1983, the F/A-18 Hornet ("fighter/attack") is still in operational service with the U.S. Navy and Marines, in addition to numerous international militaries. The rugged aircraft performs numerous duties including fighter escort, fleet air defense, air interdiction, close air support, aerial reconnaissance, and more. Its first combat action was over Libya in 1986, with subsequent missions during the Gulf and Iraq Wars.
