The LVT-2 "Water Buffalo" was an upgraded variant on the inaugural LVT and featured better armor and a new, powerful Stuart tank transmission. Initially designed solely as cargo carriers, they eventually became assault troop vehicles as well. The "4" was a fire support-upgraded "Water Buffalo" variant introduced in 1944. More than 18,000 units in all variants were ultimately manufactured, seeing service throughout World War II.
