The first operational aircraft built around stealth technology, the recognizable F-117 Nighthawk was developed by Lockheed in the early 1980s. It was introduced into the Air Force's fleet in 1983 and was widely heralded for its success during the 1991 Gulf War. It was, however, retired from U.S. service in 2008, in favor of the F-22 Raptor.
