Nicknamed the "Hoover" for its low-pitched noise, the S-3 Viking was a multi-purpose aircraft first introduced with the U.S. Navy in 1974. Its original purpose was in the anti-submarine role, though it eventually evolved into a surface warfare and aerial refueling aircraft. Though some Vikings remain in limited service, it was officially retired from carrier-based duty in January of 2009.
Only one aircraft has been given the designation "Navy One" after transporting the President of the United States: an S-3B serving with the VS-35 "Blue Wolves" stationed on the USS Abraham Lincoln. On May 1, 2003, it flew President George W. Bush to the aircraft carrier for his famous "mission accomplished" speech.
A Hobby Master replica of the plane as it appeared on that fateful day, this 1/72 scale, die cast model features that aircraft's signature artwork, engraved panel lines, a removable canopy, a well-equipped cockpit, removable crew figures, detailed turbofan engines, full weapons complement, optional-position landing gear, and a stylish presentation stand. Measures approximately 9" long with an 11½" wingspan.
