Major James Howard, piloting a P-51B Mustang he nicknamed "Ding Hao" after his time in the Pacific, flew a historic mission over Oschersleben, Germany, on January 11, 1944. In defense of B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 401st Bomb Group, Howard single-handedly attacked a swarm of Luftwaffe fighters, shooting down as many as six German warbirds. The heroic endeavor earned the aviator international notoriety and, more importantly, the Medal of Honor.
