Nicknamed the "Hoover" for its low-pitched noise, the S-3 Viking was a versatile aircraft first introduced with the U.S. Navy in 1974. Its original purpose was in the anti-submarine role, though it eventually evolved into a surface warfare and aerial refueling aircraft. Though some Vikings remain in limited service, it was officially retired from carrier-based duty in January of 2009.
