Named after the research sailing ship RV Atlantis, this space shuttle made its maiden voyage as STS-21 on October 3, 1985. Its first mission lasted four days and one hour, setting precedence to the next 32 more launches with the last one on July 8, 2011. The Atlantis spent a total of 306 days, 14 hours in space, made 4,848 orbits around the earth and traveled 125,935,769 miles before retiring.
