Beginning in 2001, Russia decided to upgrade their older Su-25 to the more modern Su-25SM that took flight on March 3 of 2002. In order to expand the life of this new aircraft they made it more lethal and All-Weather capable, along with reducing its overall operating and maintenance cost. In September 2015, they deployed twelve Frogfoot aircraft to Hmeimim airbase in Latakia province to support the Syrian government. After its initial combat mission the Su-25 had flown 1,600 sorties and dropped 6,000 bombs.
