Though development began in the early 1950s, the Saab 37 Viggen did not fly until 1967 and wasn't introduced until 1971. It was a versatile aircraft — which featured a radical double delta-wing design — that performed multiple roles for the Swedish Air Force. It was not retired until 2005 when the more modern and advanced Gripen replaced it.
