Developed and used by the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force, the Type 61 was a main battle tank in service from 1960 through 2000. Production ceased in 1975 after 560 had been manufactured. It was one of the first tanks produced after the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers ordered Japan to re-militarize. It has only operated with the Japanese military.
