Taylor downs an Aichi D3A1 "Val" dive bomber en route to the Marine base at Ewa Field during Japan's December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. Taylor and his squadron mate, 2nd Lt. George Welch, made two flights over Hawaii that day and were the first officially decorated U.S. heroes of World War II.
