Germany's Bismarck battleship, despite its less than nine-month operational life, was one of the most legendary vessels of World War II. It was commissioned in August of 1940 and embarked on only one attack mission: the very successful Rheinubung Offensive in May of 1941, in which the Bismarck sank the HMS Hood, the pride of the Royal Navy. The Bismarck was then hunted down and destroyed by Allied powers just three days later.
