The eighth series of American nuclear weapons tests, the two Operation Ivy explosions were staged in late 1952 at the Pacific Proving Grounds in the Marshall Islands.
This documentary, presented by Joint Task Force 132 in the 1950s, examines the detonation of both devices (Mike, the first full-scale hydrogen explosive, which obliterated Elugelab Island, and King, the largest all-fission device ever tested, which was dropped by a B-36H bomber). You'll see the land and sea preparations, command and control aircraft such as B-29s and B-36s along with F-84Gs gathering air samples, and, of course, the climactic "big bangs." Color, 1 hr. 3 min.
