TBD Devastator T-16 was flown by LCDR John Waldron of the VT-8 aboard the USS Hornet during the Battle of Midway. On June 4, 1942, the Wildcats and the VT-8 Devastators set out to attack Japanese carriers. Upon departure, LCDR Waldron discovered that the assigned group was heading in the wrong direction and tried to get the Wildcats to change course. However, he was only able to get his group of TBDs to follow him. VT-8 located the Japanese carriers, but without the Wildcat cover, only one crewman survived. The Devastator was first flown on April 15, 1935.
